Bennett Homes Builds Built Green Idea Home
Two MBA Built Green™ members have teamed up to provide the first Built Green™ demonstration home. Port Blakely Communities and Bennett Homes, along with MBA and the City of Issaquah, plan to open the doors of the Built Green™ Idea Home in Issaquah Highlands to the public in February for two months of tours, demonstrations and seminars.
The home exhibits many green features. Highlights include a passive solar design that utilizes sunlight for both warmth and day lighting a small vegetated deck that will illustrate the benefits of having a soft surface for rainwater runoff; rainwater collection for use as irrigation; a tankless water heating system; an efficient, ductless hydronic heating system; woodwork made from salvaged trees; an automated sun screen system; an efficient, ductless hydronic heating system; a heat recovery ventilator; natural fiber carpeting; non-toxic interior finishes such as paints; efficient Energy Star appliances; and a yard featuring native plantings and non-toxic landscaping.
"This home is designed to capture a lot of natural sunlight and create spaces bathed in warmth and light", says Steven Jewett, the Built Green™ Idea Home project manager. "We know that homebuyers are concerned with issues like asthma and allergies, and we can tell them that their dream home can be built with materials that reduce or eliminate off-gassing." The most exciting thing about Built Green™ is that so many green features don't cost more, they simply mean building smarter.
The Built Green™ Idea Home will also be a major media event that will help educate both the home buying public and the home building industry on the environmental and marketing advantages offered by a home that has been built to the Built Green™ standards, says Joe Coakley, vice president of residential development for Port Blakely Communities, developer of Issaquah Highlands.
